Sometimes winning means losing. In Chapter 28 (2009) of Tales from Out There author "Frozen" Ed Furtaw quotes the message he received from Barkley ultramarathon race director Gary Cantrell:

I regret to inform you that you did not make the waiting list ... that means that you will have to run.
